This is “Our Past Is Present” from the Geary County Historical Society.
Today is
another in the series about historic homes in Geary County. This house has an ownership connection to the
story shared yesterday in which one of the early property owners of the land on
which the Schoenrock house now sits was Daniel Mitchell. Mitchell also bought the land on which sits
340 W. Fourth Street, which some refer to today as the Carl and Ingrid Bierbaum
house. Carl Bierbaum owned the B.F.
Goodrich Stores in Junction City and Coffeyville, Kansas. The legal lot description dated 1860 was
deeded to a Robert Wilson. Wilson was an
early surveyor and he sold it to Daniel Mitchell. Michael Krebs, a Swedish carpenter, built the
house on the lot for his wife in 1886. Neither of those persons lived in the
house. It was then sold to Julius Edgar
Clemens, who died in 1932. When Julius’s
wife died in 1944, the house was sold to
Milton and Adah Mae Mackey for $3,500.
Mrs. Mackey was a school teacher.
After 1968 it was used as a rental property until the Bierbaums bought
it in 1978.
The house
was also owned by Ken and Geri Hoffman and the current owners it is currently
owned by Denver and Kelli Kell. We want
to again encourage you to take a driving tour to see some of the beautiful
historic houses in our area and you will see why we say “Our Past Is Present”
from the Geary County Historical Society.
